The following are the requirements to volunteer with Horseshoe Bend Ambulance:

For all positions (Driver, EMR or EMT):

  • Minimum age requirement is 18 (due to insurance requirements)
  • Have a valid CPR certification
  • Complete training with HSBA
  • Be affiliated with an Idaho EMS agency licensed to operate with personnel licensed at your level or a higher level. Affiliation means you have found an EMS agency that has agreed to add you to their roster as a volunteer first responder. This will be verified and completed during the application process (For an EMT, this affiliation can be granted after you have completed certification with the National Registry of EMTs).

For EMT or EMR:

  • Be able to pass a background check and fingerprinting with the DHW Criminal History Unit
  • Successfully complete the initial EMS course for that level of license with a state-approved education program
  • Successfully complete the state recognized standardized online cognitive exam that tests your EMS knowledge and psychomotor exam that tests the application of your knowledge and proficiency of skills.

For EMT: 

  • Current certification from the National Registry of EMT’s.  If you currently hold an EMS license in another state or hold a current certification with the National Registry of EMTs, you may apply for a license of the same level or lower with this proof instead of taking an initial EMS course
  • If you are licensed with a REPLICA member state, contact the bureau for information on obtaining an Idaho EMS License
  • Be affiliated with an Idaho EMS agency licensed to operate with personnel licensed at your level or a higher level. Affiliation means you have found an EMS agency that has agreed to add you to their roster as a volunteer or career (paid employee) first responder. This will be verified during the application process

Q:  What is the response zone for Horseshoe Bend Ambulance?

A:  The Horseshoe Bend Ambulance District is 55 square miles with a service area which includes north to the milepost 74 on Highway 55, west to Gem county line, east six (6) miles up to top of ridge line in the area of Jerusalem Valley and south to the Boise/Ada County line. It also includes the new community of Avimore and the expanding population of Horseshoe Bend. 

Q:  How many emergency calls does Horseshoe Bend Ambulance respond to in a year?

A: Approximately 200 calls per year 

Q:  I see Acute Rescue ambulances as well as Horseshoe Bend ambulances in town.  Who is Acute Rescue?

A:  Acute Rescue and Transport is a trusted partner of Horseshoe Bend Ambulance.  They are dispatched with Horseshoe Bend Ambulance to all emergency medical calls, at no cost to the city or taxpayers, to guarantee that all emergency medical responses in the community are met, even if local volunteers are not available.  Acute Rescue is a critical care ambulance service located in Boise, who staffs ambulance at a higher certification level (i.e. critical care level Paramedics), and is able to provide a higher level of care for more severe emergencies.  If Acute Rescue transports a patient, the patient’s insurance is billed for the service, per Medicare guidelines.  For more information on Acute Rescue, please visit their website at www.acuterescue.com
